The Indiana Youth Institute releases relevant information about the state of Indiana’s youth as it relates to health, families/communities, economics, safety and education in its annual Kids Count in Indiana Data Book. 

Here’s where we stand on college and workplace readiness: 

-65% of Hoosier students (grades 8 through 12) plan to attend a four-year college after high school. 
-8% plan to attend a two-year college. 
-3% plan to enter an apprenticeship or career-technical college. 
-6% plan to work full time. 
-6% plan to join the military. 

This data alone justifies the need for, the online resource for current workforce data, including post-secondary credentials demand and job demand. We know from the data, which is pulled from Indiana online job ads, that the greatest need for workers in our state is in middle-skill jobs. Middle-skill jobs are those that require more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree, and overall, there are not enough workers with the skills to fill these jobs. These statistics of students’ post-secondary plans do not jive with the skills demand in our state. 

We need more highly-skilled workers with four-year degrees too, so it is great that so many students have their sights set on bachelor’s degrees and beyond. However, the reality is that less than a third of Indiana’s four-year college students graduate on time, and only slightly more than half graduate after six years. Only 12 percent of the state’s two-year college students finish an associate’s degree within three years. 

These statistics show us there is an information gap. Students are not aware of the realities of Indiana’s workforce and job demands. The dismal completion rates show that students are not choosing career pathways that are right for them. exists to help bridge this knowledge gap and make sure students know more about the job market, skills and how they can create the right pathway for them that will lead to success.
