Programs Assistant at Indiana Chamber of Commerce
It’s never too early for students to begin thinking about life after high school.
The future for Indiana students was the focus of the Indiana Youth Institute’s Postsecondary Counseling Institute earlier this month. It was great to see so many youth workers and school counselors learning new ways to engage their students in thinking about the future.
Charlie Appelstein spoke in the morning about how to work with difficult students. He said teachers, counselors and all youth workers can have a profound impact on a student who doesn’t believe in his or her abilities and misbehaves as a consequence. Empowering students to succeed is important for them individually, but also for our communities.
In our session, we discussed IndianaSkills.com, and how our data can help students make informed career choices. We shared that the highest demand for workers in Indiana is in the middle-skills area – jobs that require more than a high school diploma and less than a 4-year degree. Our goal is to help counselors understand all of the post-secondary options and enable them with the resources to help students succeed.

IndianaSkills.comaims to bridge the gap between the types of training and credentials people are pursuing in Indiana and the skills being requested by our state’s employers. The site provides information on employer demand for specific jobs, skills and certifications compared to the supply of graduates completing short-term training (two years or less beyond high school) related to these jobs, skills and certifications.
