Four of the most critical words to workforce and economic development efforts in Indiana and nationwide today are science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

From USA Today: “A new Brookings Institute study found that STEM jobs take more than twice as long to fill as other openings, a situation that is slowing payroll growth throughout the U.S.

“Even more surprising, a high school graduate with a STEM background is in higher demand than a college grad without such skills, the report says. STEM jobs that require only a high school or associate's degree are advertised for 40 days on average vs. 37 days for jobs demanding a bachelor's degree only.

“At the other end of the spectrum, office and administrative support, manufacturing and buildings and grounds openings took the least amount of time to fill — 24 to 28 days.”

A foundational goal of is to point out where the job demand is in Indiana and educate students, adults, school counselors and policymakers on how to use the data to inform decisions. Our vision is for middle school and high school students to understand all of their post-secondary options and determine their career pathway before they graduate from high school, based on their skills and job demand.

IndianaSkills.comaims to bridge the gap between the types of training and credentials people are pursuing in Indiana and the skills being requested by our state’s employers. The site provides information on employer demand for specific jobs, skills and certifications compared to the supply of graduates completing short-term training (two years or less beyond high school) related to these jobs, skills and certifications.
